Jaya stumbled through the portal to the palace. It was a little after midday, and she was beyond drunk. Belisaâs makeshift wine back in Inestar was water compared to the drinks at the bar Olivia had taken them to. Jaya had two drinks to Oliviaâs four. Yet, somehow she was the one who ended up being escorted to the nearest port station with her arm slung over Oliviaâs shoulders and her face buried in turquoise hair.
Sheâd had enough sense to select a random station on the map instead of going directly to the palace. It was the only good decision sheâd made today.
Jaya took the long way around the palace to the stairway of her balcony. Once she was in her room, she flopped backward onto the bed and waited for everything to stop spinning. The teal tiles on the ceiling blurred in and out of focus like chameleons. Their bronze diamonds shifted, morphing into brown circles.
âWhat are you looking at?â
Stupid, judgy chameleons. She rolled on her stomach so she wouldnât have to look at them anymore. He probably brought them in here. Come look at the drunk savage. Like she gave a damn what he thought, what any of them thought of her.
Jaya starfished on the bed, rubbing the smooth sheets between her fingers. Her thoughts trickled in slowly. She reached out, trying to touch both sides of the enormous mattress, when it hit her, like an animal that had scented its predator nearing. Ice crowded in her veins, acid in her lungs. She wasnât sure where it came from, the knowing, but it was undeniable.
Someone was in her room.
And it wasnât the first time. She had sensed them before, watching her. She thought it was paranoia, but now the pounding in her chest was proof her instincts were right. Jaya sat up, casting her eyes from the patterned ceilings to the floor. Entrance to exit. There was no one there, and still, she felt the air stir as they moved closer.
Forget this. She pulled her dagger, ready to slice her way from corner to corner until she hit flesh. No. Save your energy. Her warriorâs mind was functioning even if her body had descended into chaos. Whoever this was would come to her. In the past, they had watched passively, but today the clouds darkened in anticipation of a coming conflict, filling the room with charged ether. She would meet her enemy today.
âCome out, kitten. I know youâre in here.â
A slur, brief and muttered, told her a lot. It was a male, and he was somewhere near the bathroom. She turned and cursed herself for being so stupid. The room seesawed for half a second before settling into a blurry-edged illusion. This was what she got for wanting more. He had probably seen her drunken stumble in and decided today was the day.
âIâve been called worse, kitten." She said, taking a step towards the bedroom doors.
âIâm going to enjoy killing you."
She felt the air bristle as he moved. She panned left with him, breathing deeply to pick up his scent.
